Biography

Sogol Kashani, a visual artist and curator, was born in 1979 in Tehran, Iran. She attended art school and completed her studies in fashion and textile design at Science & Culture University in 2004. Her passion for drawing and painting led her to showcase her works in various exhibitions. In 2016, Dastan’s Basement Gallery in Tehran hosted an exhibition of her works titled “Inconsolable.” In 2021, the In/Ja Gallery in Tehran displayed her works under the title “Body Is All.” Additionally, Sogol creates artist’s books, several of which were featured in the 2021 and 2022 editions of the Bon-gah Art Book Fair in Tehran, represented by InJa Gallery. Notably, in 2022, Sogol’s works were selected for the Mohammad Siah Qalam Contemporary Persian Painting Biennale. Sogol’s primary focus of study and practice revolves around Iranian miniature painting. Specifically, she examines the role of architecture in Iranian miniatures and seeks to uncover the connection between architecture and contemporary social contexts.

 

In the fall of 2019, Sogol was awarded a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, supported by the Institut Français and the French Embassy in Iran. During this residency, she developed a body of work, “What Ever Happened to Cypress?” which was exhibited there.

 

Since 2010, Sogol Kashani, in collaboration with Joubeen Miresakandari, has founded a curatorial platform titled Sogol & Joubeen Studio. Together, they curated several group exhibitions in Tehran, which were showcased in various galleries. In 2017, Sogol & Joubeen directed a documentary film on underground music in Tehran, which was screened only once privately at the Ab-Anbar Gallery in Tehran due to the prohibition of the subject. In 2019, they presented a documentary project titled “A House” at Platform 28 in Tehran. In 2022, Sogol & Joubeen Studio were awarded the Les Rencontres d’Arles Curatorial Research Fellowship for the project “Between Our Walls”, which culminated in an archival photo and video exhibition showcased at Les Rencontres d’Arles Festival in Arles, France, during the summer of 2023. She lives and works in Tehran.
